Annette is trying and failing to save for a new house. It’s not like she’s addicted to shopping or anything – ok, maybe just a little – but the main problem is that with so many accounts and cards all over the world, it’s impossible to keep track of her money.

She never knows exactly how much she has, and how much it’s OK to spend. And then she met gini.

You’re not alone: most people find it hard to achieve their saving goals because they spend first and save what’s leftover at the end of the month. In the wise words of Warren Buffet, the golden rule of successful saving is:

Easier said than done, you say. We hear you – habits are difficult to change. That’s why we designed gini to do the maths for you and make the whole savings game much simpler. 

Once you set your saving goal, gini calculates how much it’s OK to spend every month with this simple formula:

Then, your savings rings will tell you if your spending is on track (green), when you need to slow down (orange), and when to stop altogether (red).

We’ve heard your questions! Here are some tips to help you make the most of gini:

My income is not showing, why?

Make sure your payroll account is linked to gini, and that the transaction comes in as recurring income. gini will recognize an income as ‘recurring’ if:

  1. It comes from the same sender account
  2. It goes to the same recipient account 
  3. The amount is the same (or less than 10% different) every time it comes in 
  4. It arrives on the same day of the month every month
  5. It has a valid merchant 

Some personal transactions, such as rent, may come in uncategorized at first. To register it as income, simply tap on the transaction and follow the steps to create a merchant for it. 

A recurring expense is missing. What should I do?

gini recognizes recurring expenses using the same requirements as the recurring income ones listed above. If your expenses tick all the boxes above but are still not showing up, please email us at hello@gini.co and we’ll help you sort it out. 

Can I add more than one income?

Yes you can! Go to your “Save” page, tap the “Income” dropdown list, then select “Extra”. Choose the income you’d like to add, then tap “Save”, and gini will factor it into the calculations. 

Can I change my saving goal after setting it?

Yes! Tap on your Saving Goal and slide it to your desired amount anytime, and gini will update your OK to Spend calculations automatically. 

It is showing a budget period longer than one month. What went wrong?

The budget period depends on the regularity of your main source of income. Currently, gini supports monthly income only. If your recurring income has a different time period, your budget period and your saving plan may not be behaving as expected. 

It could also be because you haven’t chosen the income of the month. Your budget period starts from the day your income arrives. Make sure you’ve chosen the latest income transaction.
