gini account
Q
Do I need to pay to use the gini app
A

Nope! gini is free.

Q
I forgot my password. What should I do?
A
  1. Don’t panic
  2. On your login page, tap Forgot password
  3. Enter your email address (the one you used to register for the app)
  4. Check your inbox for the gini Password Recovery email (or your spam folder if it’s not in your inbox)
  5. Click the link in the email, which will take you back to the app
  6. Create a shiny new password
  7. Store your new password somewhere safe, so you can find it if you forget again 😉
Q
Why didn't I receive a password recovery email?
A

Have you checked your spam folder?

If the email is not in your inbox or spam folder, it might be because you previously deactivated your account. Send us an email at info@gini.co and we’ll reactivate your account for you.

If you haven’t deactivated your account, but still didn’t receive your password recovery email, let us know at info@gini.co and we’ll help you sort it out.

Q
I forgot my 6-digit passcode. What should I do?
A
  1. Don’t panic
  2. On your passcode screen, tap Log out (it’s there at the bottom of the screen)
  3. Log in with your email and password again
  4. Set a new 6-digit passcode
  5. Store it somewhere safe, so you can find it if you forget again 😉
Q
How do I set up Face/Touch ID?
A

If you prefer to log in with Face/Touch ID, simply:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Tap General
  3. Then Authentication
  4. Turn on Face/Touch ID

Sorted.

Q
I signed up, but don’t want to link my bank account. Can I deactivate my gini account?
A

Sure, no problem. Email us at info@gini.co and we’ll help you deactivate your account. You’ll get a notification email when it’s done.

(Note: If you’re worried about security, we hear you. It’s good to be extra careful when it comes to your data. Rest assured, gini is safe. Here’s how we keep your data secure.)

Q
How do I deactivate my gini account?
A

Aw, we’re sad to see you go. But we wish you all the best with your money management in the future! To deactivate your account:

  1. Log in to the gini app
  2. Go to Settings (the gear in the top right corner)
  3. Tap General
  4. Scroll down to Delete gini, and tap Deactivate account
  5. When you tap Confirm, all your data will be deleted from gini

And hey, we can still be friends! If ever you need us, you know where to find us.

Q
How do I reactivate my gini account?
A

Yay, welcome back! If you want to start using gini again, send us an email at info@gini.co (from the same address you used for the app) and we’ll reactivate your account for you.

You’ll get a notification email when your account is up and running.

Linking bank accounts
Q
The 'Add a Bank' page is blank. What should I do?
A

If this is the first time you’re linking a bank account to gini, the page may take up to 5 minutes to load.

Make sure you have a stable internet connection, because a weak connection may interrupt the loading process.

If the page takes too long to load, try closing and re-opening the app.

If it still doesn’t load after re-opening, contact us at info@gini.co and we’ll see how we can help.

Q
My bank doesn't show up on gini's list. What should I do?
A

gini can sync the accounts of all the banks and wallets in the list below. If yours isn’t on this list, it means we don’t support that particular bank. You’re welcome to email us at info@gini.co with your request anytime!

Q
My credit card doesn't have a bank account. Can I still link it to gini?
A

Why yes you can! Adding a credit card is as simple as adding a bank account. You can either:

  1. Go to the Home page
  2. Tap the + button
  3. Select Bank Account
  4. Find the bank your credit card belongs to
  5. Follow the instructions to link your card to the app

or

  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Select Bank Accounts
  3. Tap Add New Bank
  4. Find the bank your credit card belongs to
  5. Follow the instructions to link your card to the app

Here’s the list of banks gini supports.

Q
My wife and I share a joint account. Can we both link our gini apps to the same account?
A

Unfortunately not.

To ensure maximum security, gini allows a bank account to be linked to one gini account only.

Q
I linked by bank account but it's still pending. What should I do?
A

Linking your bank account can take up to 15 minutes, so make sure you keep the app open until it’s done.

If it takes longer than 15 minutes, your bank may be momentarily unavailable, so you could try again later.

If it still doesn’t work, email us at info@gini.co and we’ll see how we can help.

Q
Why can't I see any transactions on the bank account I linked?
A

If this is the first bank account you’ve linked to gini, it may take up to 15 minutes to load your transactions. So keep the app open until it’s done.

Sometimes, a weak network connection can interrupt the process, so make sure your wifi is stable.

If the page takes too long to load, try closing and re-opening the app.

Q
My bank accounts are not updating on gini. What should I do?
A

gini does an auto-refresh after midnight every day, so as not to interrupt your daytime use. You’ll see updated transactions every morning.

To refresh your accounts, simply:

  1. Go to the Home page
  2. Pull down the app’s screen
  3. Wait until the refresh bar has stopped running across the top

Done!

If the app doesn’t refresh, you may need to re-link your bank account:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Select Bank Accounts
  3. Choose your bank
  4. Tap Edit Preferences
  5. Then Update Credentials
  6. Follow the instructions to re-link your bank account
Q
How can I refresh my bank accounts?
A

To refresh your bank accounts, simply:

  1. Go to the Home page
  2. Pull down the app’s screen
  3. Wait until the refresh bar has stopped running across the top

Done!

If the app doesn’t refresh, you may need to re-link your bank account:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Select Bank Accounts
  3. Choose your bank
  4. Tap Edit Preferences
  5. Then Update Credentials
  6. Follow the instructions to re-link your bank account
Q
How do I unlink a bank account?
A

To remove a linked bank account from your gini account, simply:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Tap Bank Accounts
  3. Select the bank account you’d like to remove
  4. Tap Edit Preferences
  5. Then Delete (Name of bank)

Done!

Q
Why does my bank require re-authentication every time gini refreshes?
A

gini does an auto-refresh for most bank accounts after midnight every day, so as not to interrupt your daytime use. You’ll see updated transactions every morning. However, some banks require re-authentication every time the app refreshes.

To re-link your bank account:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Select Bank Accounts
  3. Choose your bank
  4. Tap Edit Preferences
  5. Then Update Credentials
  6. Follow the instructions to re-link your bank account
Q
My bank disconnected itself. What should I do?
A

Sometimes, if your bank is undergoing routine maintenance, your account may disconnect with gini. Don’t worry, everything will be back to normal once the maintenance is complete. After 24 hours, your bank account should automatically re-link itself.

Q
gini is not showing all the accounts under my bank. What should I do?
A
  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Tap Bank Accounts
  3. Select the bank your missing account(s) belong to
  4. Tap Edit Preferences
  5. Make sure the Show button is on

gini’s default setting does not show bank accounts with a balance of zero.

If your account still isn’t showing, email us at info@gini.co and tell us:

  • The email address you use for your gini app
  • The name of the bank your missing account belongs to
  • The nature of your account (savings, checking, credit, debit, etc)
  • The name of the account (premium, visa, master, etc)
  • Any useful information that will help us detect and fetch the missing account for you

Do NOT tell us your account or credit card number. That’s for your eyes only.

Q
I don't want gini to show some of my accounts. How do I hide them?
A

To hide an account, simply:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Tap Bank Accounts
  3. Select the bank your account belongs to
  4. Tap Edit Preferences
  5. Turn off the Show button

That’s it! gini will no longer include the transactions from that account in your Total Balance, Income, Expenses and OK to Spend calculations.

Q
I don't want my matured time deposit to show on gini. How do I hide it?
A

To hide your matured time deposit, simply:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear at the top right corner)
  2. Tap Bank Accounts
  3. Select the bank your time deposit belongs to
  4. Tap Edit Preferences
  5. Turn off the Show button

That’s it! gini will no longer include the matured time deposit in your Total Balance, Income, Expenses and OK to Spend calculations.

You may prefer to list the time deposit as an internal transfer instead. To do that, simply:

  1. Go to the Feed page
  2. Tap the time deposit transaction
  3. Go to the category list and choose Internal Transfer
Q
Why is my Total Balance on gini different to my bank balance?
A

The Total Balance shown at the top of gini’s home page is calculated as the [Total income of all linked bank accounts] – [Total up-to-date expenses of all linked bank accounts]. Note that gini includes your real-time credit card expenses in the total expenses calculation.

Therefore, your Total Balance on gini, which includes real-time credit card expenses, is likely to be less than your bank balance, which does not show your credit card expenses immediately.

Q
How far back does my transaction history go with gini?
A

When you link your bank account, gini will show all your transactions automatically, going back as far as your bank allows. Just like with e-statements, some banks show transactions up to 6 months back, some more, some less.

When linking to gini, most banks allow a 2-month transaction history. The good news is, you’ll always be able to see your transaction history starting from 2 months before you got gini no matter how long you use the app for.

Q
I have 2 sets of login details for the same bank. Can I add both accounts to gini?
A

To ensure maximum security, gini only allows one set of login details for each bank account.

Banks with specific requirements
Q
Standard Chartered
A

If your Standard Chartered account can’t link to gini, it is likely due to their new Mobile Key service. As part of their mobile security policy, the bank has an approval notification process that also applies when you log in to your Standard Chartered internet banking.

To link your Standard Chartered account to gini:

  • Download the latest Standard Chartered app
  • Register your Face/Touch ID on your Standard Chartered app
  • Register your Standard Chartered Mobile Security Key on your phone
  • Open your gini app and add your Standard Chartered account
  • After about 10 to 20 seconds, your Standard Chartered mobile app will send you a Login Push Notification. Open it and you will see this pop up:

  • Tap Approve, and your bank account will start linking to gini

(NOTE: Be quick to tap Approve, as there’s only a short time window to complete this process!)

Q
HSBC/ Hang Seng
A

At the moment, gini only supports dual-password authentication for HSBC and Hang Seng banks. If you haven’t set that up, you can do it with your HSBC or Hang Seng online banking.

To set up the dual password method, follow the steps below (for HSBC):

Here’s more information on HSBC’s dual password settings.

Once you’ve set up your dual password with HSBC or Hang Seng, open your gini app, where you’ll be asked to fill in your second HSBC or Hang Seng password.

  3. Go to More Options
  4. Tap Ignore transaction

An ignored transaction won’t be included in your Total Balance or your Reports calculations.

  3. Tap on the grey ignored transaction
  4. Go to More Options
  5. Tap Include Transaction

gini will recalculate your Total Balance and Reports to include the transaction.

Q
There are duplicate transactions. What should I do?
A

If there are duplicate transactions showing up on your gini app and your bank statement, it could be a sign of fraud. Notify your bank immediately.

If the duplicates show up on gini but not your bank statement, it might be a temporary glitch. It’s not possible to delete a transaction on your gini app, but you can hide the transaction instead. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Home page
  2. Tap the transaction you want to hide
  3. Go to More Options
  4. Tap Ignore transaction

An ignored transaction won’t be included in your Total Balance or your Reports calculations.

To control the visibility of ignored transactions:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear icon at the top right corner)
  2. Tap Display & Preferences

  4. Go to More Options
  5. Tap Include Transaction

gini will recalculate your Total Balance and Reports to include the transaction.

Q
Why are the transactions on gini different to my bank statements?
A

gini pulls the information from your bank account in read-only mode, and never changes details of transactions such as amount, time, date, etc. If a transaction takes 2 to 3 working days to show on your bank account, it will be the same for gini, too.

However, if the information on gini is totally different from your bank statement, please contact us at info@gini.co and tell us:

  • The email address you use for your gini app
  • The name of the bank account/credit card that your transaction belongs to (e.g. HSBC savings, etc)
  • The expected information that should appear on gini (transaction date, balance amount, transaction amount, income/expense and currency)

We will look into it for you. (Note: do NOT tell us your bank account number. That’s for your eyes only.)

If there are missing transactions on gini, please contact us at info@gini.co and tell us:

  • The email address you use for your gini app
  • The name of the bank account/credit card that your transaction belongs to
  • The date and amounts for each transaction
  • Any useful information that will help us detect and fetch the missing transactions for you

Do NOT tell us your bank account number. That’s for your eyes only.

Simple Saving Feature
Q
Why is my income not showing?
A

Make sure your payroll account is linked to gini, and that the transaction is categorised as a recurring income. gini will recognise an income as ‘recurring’ if:

  1. It comes from the same sender account every time
  2. It goes to the same recipient account every time
  3. The amount is the same (or less than 10% different) every time
  4. It arrives on the same day of the month every month (or week/fortnight/quarter)
  5. It has a valid merchant

Some personal transactions, such as rent, may be uncategorised. To register an income, simply tap on the transaction and follow the steps to create a merchant for it.

Q
A recurring expense is missing. What should I do?
A

gini will recognise an expense as ‘recurring’ if:

  1. It comes from the same sender account every time
  2. It goes to the same recipient account every time
  3. The amount is the same (or less than 10% different) every time
  4. It goes out on the same day of the month every month (or week/fortnight/quarter)
  5. It has a valid merchant

Some personal transactions, such as rent, may be uncategorised. To register an expense, simply tap on the transaction and follow the steps to create a merchant for it.

Please note that if the date varies too much, our system may not pick it up as a recurring expense.

Q
Can I add more than one income?
A

You can only have one Main Income, but you can have multiple extra incomes.

Go to your Save page, tap the Income dropdown list, then select Extra.

Choose the income you’d like to add, then tap Save, and gini will factor it into the calculations.

However, the Saving Goal time period is based on the Main Income only, as extra incomes are not considered ‘recurring’.

Here’s more about how to use our Simple Saving feature.

Q
Can I change my saving goal after setting it?
A

Yes, you can!

Tap on your Saving Goal and slide it to your desired amount anytime. gini will update your OK to Spend calculations automatically.

Q
My budget period is longer than one month. What went wrong?
A

The budget period starts on the day your Main Income arrives and lasts until the next instalment.

Currently, gini supports weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly budget periods. If your Main Income is irregular or has a different time period than the above options, your budget period and saving plan may not be behaving as expected.

Also, make sure your most recent Main Income transaction has been labelled correctly on gini.

Q
Can I manually input my Main Income?
A

Yes you can!

To do so, tap the ‘+’ sign on your Home page and input the details of your cash income. Then, go back to your Save page and select your manually added income as Main Income.

Cash feature
Q
Can I add a cash expense without attaching it to a cash withdrawal transaction?
A

Yes you can!

You can create a cash income (tap ‘+’ on your Home page) and attach your cash expense to that manually added income, instead.

Q
Why does gini say I have more cash than I actually have in my wallet?
A

Every time you get cash out, gini records an ATM withdrawal for your reference. If you’re not recording your cash expenses on gini, it will think you haven’t spent the money yet. We’re working hard on a solution to this.

Other Features
Q
I received a refund, but the expense is still showing on my Reports page
A

In this case, it’s better to categorise the pair of transactions as an Internal Transfer instead.

To register a transaction as an Internal Transfer, simply:

  1. Go to the Feed page
  2. Tap the transaction you want to change
  3. Go to the category list
  4. Select Internal Transfer

Now the expense and refund will cancel each other out as expected.

Q
Can I export all my transaction data from the gini app?
A

Yes you can!

With gini’s Smart Sheet, you can export all your transaction data to a Google Sheet.

  1. Go to Settings (gear icon at top right corner)
  2. Tap Power-ups
  3. Go to Smart Sheet and tap Learn More
  4. Follow the instructions to export your data to a Google Sheet

Here’s more about how to manage your finances with the useful features on Smart Sheet.

Q
How do I stop the WhatsApp notifications?
A

To disable your WhatsApp notifications:

  1. Go to Settings (gear at the top right corner)
  2. Tap Power-ups
  3. Go to WhatsApp and tap Disable

Learn more about how WhatsApp notifications can help you stay on top of your finances.
